Founder’s Meeting_ 4_17_2011
The second founder’s meeting was held at Cass Fagan’s home in Bellevue. There were nine people and households represented. Including:
Janet Pierce, Linda Ray Miller, Lisa Peebles, Gwen Griffith, Brad Norris, Elizabeth Spencer, Cass Fagan, Diana Sullivan and Katherine Correa.
When the meeting was adjourned and the site tour began there were an additional seven people who joined the tour off of McCrory Lane.
Diana began the meeting showing the decision making tool of using colored cards for voting that has been used by the cohousing developers. Gwen shared some about the consensus model and how it is best used.
The first topic was the workshop. Brad Norris, Diana Sullivan, Jack Blair and Cass Fagan participated in the recorded call with Katie McCamant interviewing her about their program at the workshop. They provide 2 ½ days of a workshop that includes viewing possible sites on Friday and then they work with the group on criteria for site selection, evaluating a strategy for development, reviewing financing models, creating a timeline for the next 6 months, establishing membership agreements, choosing a communication model.
The group held over an hour of discussion about the workshop and a consensus was reached to host it. A vote was held regarding using the services of Cohousing Partners and everyone was in agreement but Gwen Griffith who expressed concerns. Gwen volunteered to research more references on the end results of the consultant’s work and report back to the group at the next meeting.
The group agreed to hold the next meeting on Sunday, May 1 at 2 pm. The location will be announced later. The decision was made to begin on that date contributing money toward a workshop. Some will be contributing the full amount and some will set up a schedule of payment as needed. A decision will be made at that meeting how much and the deadline. A survey will be taken of additional people who might have interest in attending. The group contributed ideas for raising additional funds through sponsorships.
Discussion was held about how to handle the money. Diana mentioned she could establish an LLC with New American Villages to hold the funds for the workshop only. Lisa suggested that Janet and she research the possibility of using a title company.
Cass and Stuart mentioned they thought it should be required reading of the new cohousing book by Katie McCamant and Chuck Durrett, “Creating Cohousing”. There was no vote taken but the suggestion was well received.
An announcement was made that the urban cohousing group was hosting a study group around the cohousing book beginning Wednesday, April 20 at Jack Blair’s home on Central Ave starting at 7 pm.
The second topic of discussion was about the group sponsoring and attending a non violent communication workshop. Katherine arranged for a meeting with two consultants Andrew Workum and Tracy Wimberly and Brad, Diana and Jenny attended the interview. They all four recommended that the cohousing group would greatly benefit not only as a group but individually in their relationships with family, business and community. The founder’s group voted and there was a consensus to host the workshop and also to provide two opportunities: a one day event and a series of three evenings of a 2 hour event. Katherine agreed to check the couple’s schedule and to try to set up one event in May and one in June. There is no set charge for attending. They advised that it is up to each individual to decide. The core of the teaching is that we all have a need to have our needs met and having financial stability is a need. Therefore, that remains open and to be decided by each individual. Their bios are attached.
Discussion was held about the www.nashvillecohousing.proboards and how best to use it. Stuart and Cass both felt it was a great tool for communication. LindaRay offered to send out a reminder to the founder’s group to go to the board often.
Diana announced a need for the Hermitage group to gather either in person or by conference call. Stuart asked for a conference call. A survey will be taken for the best date and it will be set.
The meeting was wrapped up and notes were taken by Katherine.
The group departed for a sunny walk along the ridge off of McCrory Lane.
